As a student of leadership I have much respect for Winston Churchill. As a student of history I have an even greater appreciation for his leadership skills in a most turbulent time in world history. His strength and resolve during World War II gave the British people hope in their darkest hours. His courage and sense of purpose was the driving force that ultimately led the Allies to victory.
Step back in time with me and let Churchill’s own words teach us some time-tested leadership lessons that are applicable today. Here are six of my favorites.

Coaching—or what you might know as Life, Business, Executive, or Leadership Coaching—has been around for about 30 years now. Although many people understand generally what it is, there are still some misconceptions out there. So what’s the difference between getting advice and getting coached?
The main difference is this: it’s not a coach’s job to give advice. No coach is smart enough or has the depth and breadth of knowledge to give perfect advice all the time. Truth is, most people don’t want advice. Even when the person being coached says “Tell me what you think I should do,” nobody really wants to be told what to do.

Done well, performance management is a partnership where managers and direct reports work together to set goals, work through challenges, and celebrate accomplishments. A leader provides increased direction when a person is new to a task, extra support when they are learning, and gradual autonomy as they become skilled and experienced.
A short 3-minute video just released by The Ken Blanchard Companies shares that this idea is much easier in theory than it is in practice. As a sales and marketing manager in my company, I have been raising flags regarding the way we are responding to the market shrinking and business conditions.
I see us headed for a critical situation soon and have suggested several solutions to our GM. He simply doesn’t listen. He refuses to take any risk, even if it’s calculated.

One area of my life which is a constant work in progress is managing stress. As an entrepreneur, wife and mother, you simply cannot avoid all the triggers that can cause you to worry or feel anxious. I will also admit that my desire to have things fit into pretty little boxes in life doesn’t help in this effort one bit.
Throughout my workday, I can feel subtle signs of stress creeping in. My shoulders get tense, I hold my breath and I get easily distracted. This is something I can’t – and shouldn’t – push through. I need to address the root of the problem and take action to relieve my stress. It’s the only way I can change this mindset and get back to working effectively.

Statistics Canada says nearly a third of Canadians are sleep deprived. The health effects include obesity, heart disease and premature death. Today, a group of American doctors published new guidelines on how to combat a growing health menace.
A policy statement by the American Thoracic Society says good sleep is critical for good health and quality of life. The amount of sleep needed by an individual varies significantly with age across the lifespan. However, the average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night to maintain good health. Call it the Goldilocks approach. For most Canadians, getting 6 hours of sleep per night or less is associated with negative effects on your health and can even lead to premature death. A huge number of labels appear on supermarket foods, but their meaning might be confusing. Here is a look at some of the most common labels.
Organic foods are certified by an outside body to contain at least 95 per cent organic ingredients. However, the “organic” label is only certified when a food is traded over provincial or national borders. While some provinces have certifications for organic products within their borders, not all do.
Organic animals must be raised in conditions that at a minimum allow them enough space to lie down, turn around freely, stretch their limbs and allow access to daylight and fresh air. Organic foods generally cannot contain the following (though some exceptions are made):
- Added hormones and prophylactic antibiotics
- Radiation or irradiated substances
- Cloned animals or their descendants
- Intentionally-manufactured nano-technology products
- Synthetic pesticides
