Think with me for a moment on those that have made the difference in your leadership path. No doubt there were many.
But try to picture one, just one, who made the most impact on you.
Think about the qualities they possess. The traits that make them who they are. The characteristics that you would like to emulate and adopt.
Maybe they gave you a chance when no one else would. Perhaps it was a word of encouragement when you were defeated. They may have been a steady influence of character in an otherwise chaotic environment.
When I think back on my best mentor, I come away with the following:
- They were always positive, and never would say anything negative about anyone
- They were a tremendous buffer shielding the attitudes and politics above us so that we could concentrate on those we served
- They were transparent and authentic
